Isi artikel
The effects of a surprising change in reward magnitude on blocking of the acquisition of stimulus control by brightness cues introduced following prior acquisition of discriminative stimulus control by internal cues were investigated in two experiments employing an instrumental go/no-go discrimination problem. Blocking was attenuated in both experiments by a surprising decrease in reward to the negative (S- ) stimulus coincident with the beginning of compound stimulus training. In Experiment 1, a delay in the reduction of S- reward until Day 5 of compound stimulus training also attenuated the blocking effect and did so to the same degree as a reduction in S- reward simultaneous with the beginning of compound training. In Experiment 2, a reduction in S- reward prior to the beginning of compound training had much less of an attenuating effect on blocking. The results are discussed with reference to theoretical explanations of blocking.
