Isi artikelFirst, third, and fifth graders (N = 432) were exposed to a list of to-berecalled (TBR) items presented visually as words or objects, or auditorily as words. The children were then tested for cued (visual word, visual object, or auditory word) or free recall. Recall to appropriate, associatively related retrieval cues (stringent scoring) was affected by the type (word or object) of TBR item and by both the type and the modality (visual or auditory) of the retrieval cue. When recall was scored independently of correct matching with retrieval cues (lenient scoring), only the type of the TBR item affected recall. Contrary to expectation, recall was not facilitated when the TBR items matched their cues in item type or in modality of presentation.
