Isi artikelTwo studies compared the cuing potential of single-letter (F, M, and L) and double-letter (FF, MM, LL, FM, FL, and ML) cues in facilitating retrieval of temporarily inaccessible words from semantic memory (F = first, M = middle, and L = last letter(s) of target word). In a between-groups design, subjects received only one type of cue whenever they failed to retrieve a target word. The cues involving the first letter plus a second letter from the first, middle, and last parts of the word (FF, FM, and FL) were the most potent. In general, first letter(s) were most effective, the last letter(s) less effective, and the middle letters least effective in cuing target word retrieval. The addition of another letter from the same part of the word (i.e., F vs. FF) significantly enhanced retrieval over a single letter, and this facilitation did not vary as a function of letter position. There was little support for the "distance" hypothesis, that cue efficacy decreases as the separation be- tween letters in a cue pair increases.
