Isi artikel
Direct comparisons (quaternary judgments) of the phenomenal ease of binary comparative judgments satisfy the axioms for a positive difference structure, allowing the construction of a representation giving ease of comparative judgment in terms of the difference in the sensations produced by the two stimuli. This result was claimed by Miinsterberg (1894) and Cattell (1902) but has not been demonstrated previously. Their further claim, that equally difficult discriminations require equal times for discrimination, is also sup- ported by data from both accuracy- and speed-instructed subjects in a same- ness-difference task, although somewhat less by speed-instructed subjects. We conclude that difficulty structures based on direct quaternary judgments and those inferred from response times in the sameness-difference judgment task match probabilistically.
