Isi artikelA contemporary world is a runaway; it seem out of our control. The consequences of modernity are becoming more radicalized and universalized than before, people caught up in a universe of events they do not fully understand. But we find that one of the driving forces of these changes is democracy. Democracy opens up civil liberties by which people could participate suggestively in their public life. While some states show a progressive advancement toward a deepened democracy, some others are stalled in a slowed down pace. There is then a widespread disillusionment with democratic process. What we need in this situation, Giddens suggests, is democratizing democracy. It is because the old mechanisms of government do not work properly in a modern society, we necessarily need a deepening of democracy.
