Isi artikel
Angela Merkel used to say Germans value freedom too little. That was before she became chancellor and found that voters prefer liberalism in small doses. Joachim Gauck, soon to be president, has no inhibitions. He will be the first president who does not belong to a political party, which may bolster his popularity but also make it harder to avoid Berlin's snares. Germans like his idealism, even when they question his ideals. He is not "social" enough, some grumble. He is an unashamed patriot and an advocate of citizen activism. Yet he scolds people who prize comfort over freedom or misdirect their activism. The anti-capitalist elements of the Occupy movement are "unspeakably silly", he says. Germans need reminding that freedom is precious and fragile. Mr Gauck can do that.
