Plagiarism is an academic misconduct that has developed over a decade. The institution must be aware of this since plagiarism can bring a negative impact on academic integrity. Several studies have been conducted in Indonesia, but only a few of them discussed attitudes, factors, and types of plagiarism in one study. Therefore, this study explored them in one study in English students in three universities. This study used Attitudes Toward Plagiarism questionnaire to measure the attitudes, which contain 29 questions and divided into three sections (positive attitude (12 questions), negative attitude (7 questions), and subjective attitude (10 questions). For the factor of plagiarism, this questionnaire is adopted from Jereb et al., which consist of 7 factors of plagiarism, and used types of plagiarism questionnaire from The Plagiarism Handbook: Strategies for Preventing, Detecting, and Dealing With Plagiarism by Harris that consist of 12 types of plagiarism. Respons were collected from 104 participants. The result of this study reveals that the students have moderate attitudes of plagiarism, which is influenced by some factors such as regulation, internet, academic skills, and pressure. Also, there are some types that the students are likely to commit such as downloading a free research paper and use it as their own and translating a foreign paper. The findings of this study suggest that the university has to make a further discussion related to plagiarism so the students can get an understanding of plagiarism and be able to avoid it. |
