Whether taxpayers should subsidize sports teams is an age-old policy question. But the uproar in Portland became a very personal test for the young sports entrepreneur—one typifying the challenges that arise when someone accustomed to private transactions is forced to cut deals with politicians on a very public stage. “I needed to develop a thick skin,” Paulson says. People close to him say the unpleasantnesss helped him mature. “You can’t do what he did without learning and growing—he was battle tested,” says his father. “I didn’t give him a lot of advice, but the advice I did give him is a person can’t do anything that’s difficult or important without being criticized.”
