This study investigates the effectiveness of textual enhancement combined with explicit instruction in the acquisition of passive past perfect. In this study, grammar acquisition is measured in terms of form accuracy and the ability to produce the grammar in the right contexts. During the experiment, twenty-one EFL students read three passages containing visually enhanced passive past perfect items. After they answered comprehension questions about the content in the passages, the participants watched a video of explicit instruction about passive past perfect. To measure form accuracy, the participants completed an error-correction task in both pre-test and post-test. To measure grammar production ability in the right contexts, the participants completed an L1—L2 translation task in both pre-test and post-test. The results revealed that the improvement in form accuracy was not significant due to the participants already achieving excellent results in the pre-test. This showed that the participants had already had adequate knowledge of passive past perfect form before the experiment. However, the improvement in terms of grammar production was significant. Therefore, this study concludes that textual enhancement with explicit instruction is effective in improving both form accuracy and grammar production in the right contexts. |
