Abstract
One of the main issues in teaching grammar is the lack of forms’ awareness. Their lack of understanding of the form often contributes to the lack of their understanding in the true meaning of the sentence. Several studies have tried to answer this issue by applying various methods. Sharwood Smith (1993) hypothesized a method to increase learners’ awareness of forms by enhancing the saliency of the forms in input; which is known as Textual Enhancement. LaBrozzi (2014) has proven that increasing font size is the most effective type of textual enhancement in terms of raising learners’ awareness of a certain target grammar. However, the language skills that were aimed in LaBrozzi’s study L2 form recognition and reading comprehension in Spanish. This current study aimed to find out whether similar results will be acquired if the target language is English, in particular passive voice. This research also aimed to further explain the mechanism of textual enhancement by presenting the result of a library research. The experiment to answer the second research question was done on a total of 24 participants with pre-intermediate English proficiency. A pre-test and immediate post-test consisting of 10 multiple choice and 10 gap filling questions were given to the participants. The questions were self-made and the items were limited to regular verbs. The data obtained from the tests were later analyzed using Wilcoxon signed-rank. The result showed that the subjects’ score increased significantly in the post-test. Therefore, the result was in line with LaBrozzi’s study.
