Abstract
This study investigated the significant similarity between genders in terms of speaking anxiety level and their similarity strategies to overcome anxiety in oral performance. This study was conducted at Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia, with the participation of 32 students (16 male and 16 female students) from the English Language Education Department. Data were collected through a questionnaire and interviews. The questionnaire had two parts. On the first part, the participants were given an adapted version of Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) which was developed by Horwitz (1986) combined with Test Anxiety Inventory which was developed by Speilberger (1980). In the second part, the participants were given an adopted version of the strategies applied to reduce their anxiety, which was developed by Staley (2019). Afterwards, four students were selected randomly for participation in the interview to get a more detailed analysis of the significant differences between both gender and their similarity strategies to overcome anxiety in oral performance. The analysis of the quantitative data revealed that there are no significant differences between both genders in anxiety level. Both genders experienced a high level of anxiety in oral performance. The quantitative data also revealed that “select a topic of interest to you then prepare the topic carefully” became the most chosen strategy by both genders. Other than that, there is no strategy that was chosen by the students that has the same amount.
