Abstract
Mastery on communicative competence has been gaining more attention over linguistic competence in recent years. The implementation of tasks have been reported in several studies such as in Alemi, Jahangard & Hesami (2013) and in Elmiana (2018). Task-Based Learning (TBLT) which was first proposed by Prabhu (1987) promotes EFL students’ communicative competence in language learning as reported in Alemi et al. (2013), and in Elmiana (2018). However, in terms of task types distribution and composition, there is a bias toward tasks under linguistic category as shown in the findings from both Alemi et al. (2013) and Elmiana (2018). Additionally, there is limited literature investigating task types distribution and composition. The present study aimed to investigate task types distribution and composition of three Global textbooks used in an Indonesian senior high school. The present study also share similarities with both Alemi et al.’s (2013) and Elmiana's (2018) studies because it is conducted based on the findings from both studies. A framework proposed by Nunan (1999) was used to analysed the task types in the three Global textbooks. The result of this study share more similarities with Alemi et al.’s (2013) than with Elmiana's (2018) studies as linguistic task types appear the most frequent than other task types in the three Global textbooks. The findings from the present study provide insights on task types distribution and composition in order to develop more suitable tasks based on each of their purposes.
