Reading is a big part of one’s everyday life. Whether it is to gain information, for pleasure, or as a way to obtain knowledge about a new language, our daily life consists of a lot of readings. However, it is still common seeing students having difficulties with reading, which is why extensive reading arises as a solution to help students nurture positive attitude towards reading. That said ER implementation in Indonesia did not show drastic result. Hence, this study aims to find out readers’ perception, perspective, and preference in order to figure out what kind of ER program the students want. In general, the readers have very positive attitude towards ER and tend to value having freedom over their ER experience, which explained why self-selecting reading materials and materials selection came out as the top ranking attributive factors. The participants of this study thinks that having in-class activities had little to do with the success of ER program due to the very nature of ER itself, which was reading for pleasure. The readers also preferred doing activities that could be done independently from outside class. |
