Isi artikel
The effect of two personality variables (extroversion-introversion, and sensate-intuitiveo) n eyewitnessp erformancew as examinedu nder four arousal conditions (no arousal, early arousal, late arousal, and early/late arousal). Arousal was manipulated by having subjects run in place. Subjects (N = 243) viewed 25 color slides depicting a vehicle-pedestrian accident. A 20-item questionnaire was then given which contained consistent or misleading information concerning a vehicle stopped at a stop sign or a yield sign. After taking a test to determine their personality type, subjects were asked via a forced-choice recognition task to identify the original item (stop or yield sign) that was observed during the slide presentation. Subjects were also asked to judge their confidence level for each item on the questionnaire and the recognition task. The major findings indicated that (a) arousal levels decreased across the time frame of the experiment especially for introverts and intuitives, (b) in general, eyewitness performance was superior for introverts relative to extroverts, (c) when the information was consistent, extroverts and introverts were differentially influenced by early and late arousal, (d) confidence was positively related to accuracy and arousal, and (e) confidence was higher in extroverts relative to introverts. In general, the results provide support for the notion that a curvilinear relationship exists between arousal and eyewitness performance.
