Abstract
The object of this study is investigating the types of feedback used frequently and students’ perceptions towards lecturer’s feedback in order to find the suitable feedback for university level in speaking class.. Due to this objective, the two research questions are raised: (1) What is the type of feedbacks used frequently by lecturer in the speaking class at English Education of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia?; (2) What are the students perception towards oral feedback given by the lecturer in order to motivate them participating actively in the speaking class? The theories that were used in this research were the types of feedback by Lyster and Ranta (1999), and the questionnaire of students’ perception towards teacher’s feedback by Zale (2014). The participants of this study were 32 students college of English Department at Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia that were taking listening and speaking fundamentals class that available in the 1st semester. The instruments used in the study were transcription of the recording about learning activity in listening and speaking fundamentals class and the questionnaire contains of 16 items. As the result, the finding analysis displays that the most frequent type of feedback used in listening and speaking fundamentals class is explicit correction which is considered as the most suitable feedback to use in speaking class because it does not take time like the other feedbacks. Furthermore students’ perceptions toward lecturer’s feedback in listening and speaking fundamentals class showed that lecturer mostly used positive feedback to encourage students of being active in speaking class.
