This study deals with the fillers produced by Senior High School students in St. Bellarminus, Menteng, Jakarta in their Instagram videos assignment. The aims of this paper are to find out the frequencies of fillers produced by the students in their video’s assignment, and to find out the fillers as well as their functions produced by the students in their video’s assignment. In order to achieve these objectives, the researcher utilized the AntConc Corpus to find the frequencies of fillers. Thus, the researcher applied Rose’s (1998) theory on the types of fillers which combined with Baalen’s (2001), Gryc’s (2014), and Erten’s (2014) theory on the functions of fillers. Instagram videos assignment was given to the students. The assignment was a speaking-task in which the students—in pairs—have to discuss any controversial issues they have chosen for approximately 2 minutes and it has to be recorded and uploaded on Instagram. Through the video recordings and related transcriptions, the results revealed that students often produced unlexicalized filled pauses rather than lexicalized filled pauses. In the fillers’ functions, fillers produced by the students had the roles as hesitation, empathizing, and editing term device. Also, this study aims to present fillers and their functions which can be noticed by the students to fulfill their understanding about fillers. In addition, the students can exploit these fillers to increase their speaking interaction, depends on the context of situation. |
