Isi artikelBased on previous research and on the concept of sagacity (Scheibe, 1979), abstract reasoning ability was related to the ability to interpret implications in word association (WAIT) protocols. Because the WAIT requires "reading between the lines," reading comprehension was also used to predict performance. Subjects making good or poor judgments were found to differ on abstract reasoning and reading comprehension, particularly on interpretive kinds of understanding. Both variables had an indirect effect via their influence on task-specific reasoning assessed in an essay. Good and poor subject-judgesa lso differed on the AmericanC ollege Test (ACT),p articularly in terms of the English and Social Studies subtests.
