Isi artikelTwo experiments were conducted to examine the effects of shifting base rates or relative frequencies of categories at different points in training. Medin and Edelson (1988) observed an inverse base-rate effect, and theories addressing this effect stress frequencies prevailing during learning rather than overall frequency as the mediating factor. Early and late frequency differences had differing consequences. Inverse base-rate effects were observed only for initial frequency differences. Frequency later in training was associated with direct rather than inverse base-rate effects. These results suggest that inverse base-rate effects are a by-product of some form of competitive learning
