Isi artikelIndividual differences in the pattern of circadian arousal on the speed of accessing information from long-term memory were investigated. Subjects of college age were identified as morning type or evening type and tested at 0900, 1400, or 2000 hr. Subjects were given a series of word pairs and required to decide whether the two words were physically identical, had the same name, or were members of the same semantic category. The performance of morning-type individuals decreased across time of day, whereas the performance of evening types improved throughout the day. The results suggest that the effect of diurnal variations on memory performance is critically dependent upon whether the subject is a morning or evening type.
