Abstract
The role of seaweed extraction G. verrucosa as an antioxidant ingredient has been widely studied. The extraction needs to be optimized using various solvents. The objective of this research was to evaluate phytochemical profiles and antioxidant activity of red seaweed G. verrucosa extracts. Qualitative phytochemical screening of G. verrucosa revealed the presence of alkaloids, triterpenoids, saponins, and phenolics. Bioactive compounds of G. verrucosa were extracted using maceration technique and three different solvents (ethanol, distilled water and warm distilled water) in which warm distilled water gave the highest extraction yield (7.56%). Gas chromatography - mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis showed that n-Hexadecanoic acid was the compound with the highest peak area percentage in ethanolic (37.87%), distilled water (12.33%), and warm distilled water extract (11.42%). Antioxidant activity of G. verrucosa which was investigated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging method showed that ethanolic extract had the strongest antioxidant activity (IC50 = 21,730.07 ppm) compared to distilled water and warm distilled water extracts. Thus, in conclusion, G. verrucosa extract had high potential to be natural antioxidant source.
