Isi artikelClinical competence embodies three elements: clinical skills, which include the technical aspects of the patient consultation (communication, history-taking, physical examination, etc).), knowledge and problem solving ability. A pre-requisite of successful problem solving is proficiency in clinical reasoning. Clinical reasoning is the cognitive process by which the information contained in a clinical case is synthesized, integrated with the physician's knowledge and experience, and used to diagnose and manage the patient's problem. Two different approaches to clinical reasoning are non-analytic and analytic. However, excessive reliance on non-analytic approach to clinical reasoning can be a source of terror. Therefore the teachers should nurture students to become good in analytic approach of clinical reasoning. A primary goal of problem-based learning (PBL) is to foster clinical reasoning skills in students. This article is aimed to provide a review of literature on how clinical reasoning develop and how PBL facilitate the development of clinical reasoning in analytical approach.
