Isi artikelThe approach used to represent the relation between strategy and structure is becoming increasingly outdated as a means of understanding how strategies are formed. The strategy / structure link has traditionally been represented in such as way as to define ideal configurations. Following the example of recent worked addressing the question, I propose that the link between strategy and structure be reexamined, by drawing on two episodes which occured during a strategic planning exercise within a garment manufacturing enterprise undergoing reorganization. The first episode, which concerns the spatial reorganization of the company, highlights the way in which organizational rules contribute to strategic change. The second episode, having to do with the preparation of a new fashion collection, illustrates the importance of modifying the arrangement of resources when introducing a new strategic orientation. Based on the analysis of these episodes, I demonstrate how the systems and strategic competence contribute, through daily activities, to the structuring of links between strategy and structure. This brings me to call on the notion of "overcoding" to take into account the duality of strategy in the present day context of enterprise modernization.
