Isi artikelThe need to plan for the unexpected in the telecom sector should be clear after the meteoric rise and fall experienced by many companies in the late 1990s throughout the world. While there is no foolproof method, one way to minimize surprises and take advantage of all the confusion in the marketplace is to recognize that investments have to be evaluated against the major uncertainties and not against a single set of assumptions about the future. The scenario planning methodology offers a way to do exactly that. In this article, the authors outline three plausible alternative futures over a five year period, highlighting the major uncertainties in Brazil against which proposed strategies should be tested. The use of alternative scenarios to develop and test telecom strategy is particularly relevant at the present time as the Brazilian telecom sector is likely to undergo major changes over the next five years with the introduction of new services based on a range of new technologies such as VoIP, WiMax, IPTV, mobile VoIP, mobile TV and so on.
