Isi artikel
In recent years, the term strategic flexibility has become a common in the literature. However, it does not make easier to comprehend the term. The author argued that the difficulty stems from the existence of two perspectives, formation and transformation, that compete one another when applying strategic flexibility ideas. Further investigation shows a contrast character between these two perspectives attributed to their pattern, position and plan. Based on the combination of those three attributes, four generic subtypes of strategic flexibility were suggested on each perspective. The consistency of all eight generic subtypes in classifying strategic flexibility ideas has been demonstrated through the mapping of 100 writers' idea. The map also shows a perspective shifts from formation to transformation, beginning at the last decade. A strong resemblance to the issue of determinism versus voluntarism and macro versus micro level in the literature of organization theory and management, leads to conclusion that the underlying concept of perspective - based strategic flexibility is an ability of applying the dialectical views.
