The relation between economic growth and patent ownership in selected spin - off firms from chalmers university of technology, sweden, is examined. For 24 manufacturing spin - off firms at least three years old with at least three employees there is a positive, though weak, correlation between firm growth and patent ownership. There are more than twice as many patents in physics as there are in electrical engineering. The data indicates that these firms should productively employ in the neighborhood of ten persons per original patent in order that patenting on an international scale be a profitable undertaking for them.
