Isi artikel
A sample of 232 girls (age range 10 to 18 years; grade range 5 to 10) from predominantly lower-middle and upper-lower class were interviewed concerning shifts in family composition since their birth. The available data also led to development of synthetic "segmented longitudinal study. " Subjects' households were classified into nuclear, extended, joint, and broken family types. Over half the number of subjects were found staying in the nuclear family type while about one out of five stayed each in the extended and joint family type at the time of investigation. About one out of eleven stayed in the broken family. A child with the average age of 14.10 years was found exposed to 6.14 shifts in family figures by birth, marriage, death, separation, etc. In the discussion, the investigator has questioned the usefulness of the nuclear family type as a reference point in cross-cultural analysis of family systems
