Isi artikel
A study of the contribution of the mother's educational aspiration for her child and her estimation of his academic ability to the child's own aspiration and estimation. Data were supplied by home interviews with 243 black and white mothers of inner-city sixth grade pupils, by questionnaires administered in the classroom to their children, and by school records. When mother's and child's estimation of child's academic ability and their aspiration for him are compared with each other and with test scores and grade point averages(CPA's), members of both races (but especially black mothers) have estimations and aspirations that are high or "optimistic" according to conventional standards. Maternal estimations and aspirations are more optimistic than those of their children, but are better predictors of children's attitudes than is family socioeconomic status (SES). Moreover, a significant relationship between mother's and child's attitudes (even with SES and IQ controlled through multiple regression analysis) suggests that supportive behavior on the part of mothers is encouraging to children.
