Several theoretical ideas in role theory are integrated with the empirical literature that hos investigated such role transitions as adjusting to the coming of the first child, retirement,bereavement, etc. This analysis is an attempt to build theory by identifying and reworking propositions that are sufficiently general and precisely stated that they can be used as a basis for deductively explaining why variation occurs in the ease of making various role transitions.
