An investigation dealing with matters as varied as phone-hacking, illegal payments to police and relationships between the press and politicians has a bewilderingly wide focus. Revelations about the Dowlers' mistreatment caused outrage and sparked the inquiry. The News of the World is gone, together with many executives involved with it. James Murdoch, the senior Murdoch in News Corporation's London operations, has stepped down from the boards which publish the Sun, the Times and the Sunday Times and appears unlikely to run the media conglomerate soon.
