Isi artikelTeaching English to elementary students means that the teacher introduces English as a new lesson. Most of the material of English in the elementary school is vocabulary. The teachers must be able to select the words that will be given. Good teaching requires something more of communication process. It is not enough that the child can repeat correctly the spelling of the new words. The effective teacher’s concern is that the child will be able to recognize the words and understand it in later encounter and that the child will be able to use it appropriately. A good teaching depends on the techniques used by the teacher. Teaching vocabulary to children is different from teaching to adults because adults have wider knowledge of English than children. There are many techniques that can be used by teachers to teach vocabulary. The teacher may use one or Pictures are so helpful, so useful, so plentiful, cheap, and they can be understood easily. Pictures also can give us a lot of information that we need. They can show the things, places and people that are far from us. As Gerlach and Ely (1980:173) said that through pictures, learners can see people, places and things from far outside their own experiences
