The emergence of English as a global language requires citizens of the world to have good reading habits and command of English literacy from early age. This paper highlights the experimental study conducted to cultivate reading habits and increase literacy achievement of fifth-grade children of an under privileged school whose level of reading was very low. A set of literacy tests and a reading habit questionnaire were given to 40 randomly-selected pupils who were then equally divided into two groups, experimental and control. While the experimental group pupils were given a treatment using the Big6 strategy, the control group pupils were not. However, both groups were tested before and after the intervention. The results showed that there were statistically significant differences between the pupils who were taught using the Big6 and those who were not both in reading habits (t = 10.570; mean = 9.950; p<.000) and literacy achievement (t = 15.921; mean 17.500; p<.000). There were also statistically significant contributions of the Big6 to both reading habits (43.9%) and literacy achievement (79.9%). Among the four sub-skills of the literacy skill, it was found that the pupils had higher achievement in the receptive skills than the productive skills. Therefore, some interpretations were discussed and conclusions were also made
