Isi artikelThis study analyzes the types of English-Indonesian mixing in classroom context. This study addresses three major problems: (1) the types of code-switched construction occurring in a classroom interaction (2) the functions of code-switching and (3) factors caused the occurrence of Code-switching.This study was qualitative conducted four times with 45-60 minutes for each recording in natural setting. The subjects of the study were a speaking class of forth semester students at the English Department of TegalPancasakti University. The findings indicated that metaphorical code-switching was the most frequently occurred (442 occurrences or 91.7%) of the total code-switching (482 occurrences) and situational code-switching (40or 8.3 %). Six functions of code-switching were found in the study; message qualification (257 occurrences or 53.4%) followed by speaker has sense of humor (84 or 17.4%), repetition (62 or 12.9%), facility of expression (59 or 12.3%), addressee specification (13 or 2.7%) and personalization and objectivization (6 or 1.3%).Factors were contributing to the occurrence of code switching; topics (353 occurrences or 73.2%) was the most frequently occurred followed by key (103or 21.4%), ends (25 or 5.2%) and the least occurred was genre (1 or 0.2%). The result of the study indicates that message qualification and topics are the most significant variable influencing code-switching. Topics are the first factor leading them to alternate codes from English to Bahasa Indonesia.
