Isi artikelLanguage has a central role in learning and serves as an indispensable resource for making meaning. Language teachers need to foster active learning through the four key language modes of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The current use of text-based syllabus in which language is viewed as a social practice suggests that language should be learned inseparable from its social context, while the selection of text types to be taught is based on the existing communicative encounters most likely met in real daily life. It actually entails the use of authentic texts and requires language teachers to be texts developers. The paper aims to provide an example of how to use narratives and proverbs in a reading game by using meaning-focused output strand (MPOS) that provides learners with oppurtunities to: gain language knowledge and skills by means of active engagement of meaning making and, (2) better understanding of the world and self by exploring existing moral values dealing with shared codes of conduct and behavior which is important in character building.
