IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is used as a standardized test of English language perfomance of candidates who want to study or work in an English speaking country. We have seen a growing number of candidates sitting for the IELTS test. Consequently, there is a need to provide prospectives IELTS candidates with information about the test. This paper begins with an overview of IELTS and the explanation of IELTS versions and purposes. The fact that IELTS is particulary new in Indonesia, so it is important for test takers to familiarise themselves with the format of the test. The next part of the paper will discuss details of the test format (skills assessed) as well as resources for studying IELTS. Prospective candidates need not only the information about the test but also tips to succeed in IELTS. This paper concludes by exploring a few strategies to help candidates increase their IELTS score. It is hoped that this study will give a contribution to the development of IELTS, especially stakeholders such as English language professionals, teachers, and test centers, to develop a greater understanding of the test, and to successfuly prepare candidates to do well on the test.
