Isi artikelThis research proposed peer-assessment as one of the techniques in teaching to write descriptive texts. It is an action research aimed at finding out the role of peer assessment in improving students’ ability and enhancing their interest and awareness to write descriptive texts. This research was conducted in two learning cycles in which each applied the following research procedures: (i) planning, (ii) acting, (iii) observing, (iv) reflecting. The previous reflection was carried out as a basis of treatment for the first learning cycle. This research was conducted at SMA N 1 Slawi, Tegal, in the Even Semester of Academic year 2010/2011 starting from February until April 2011. The subject of this research was 40 students of the seventh grade from VII A class who were selected at random. The data were gathered from these following instruments: writing test, survey questionnaire of writing interest and awareness, cheklist of writing strategies and observation. The data were then analyzed in two forms; quantitative and qualitative analysis. The results of both analysis were used to draw the findings of this study. The result of the study showed that there was an improvement of students’ writing ability from pre-cycle up to second cycle. In pre-cycle, the mean of students’ writing scores was 66.2. It improved up to 71.3 in first cycle, and 79.4 in second cycle. Students’ interest and awareness in writing descriptive texts were also enhanced significantly indicated by the students’ positive responses on the questionnaire. While the result of observation of two cycles showed that both the teacher and the students had successfully conducted the teaching and learning process of writing descriptive texts through peer assessment.
