Isi artikelEFL students need to have the ability to detect and manipulate sounds from spoken language into printed materials. From that point, the teacher can move on to associate the text with the reader’s own experience. The experience in the sense of teaching reading is to answer questions by using features of the actual illustration or wording of the text before EFL learners can practice successfully in literacy lesson. The example on literacy teaching to Indigenous students, suggests that Indigenous students had difficulty to interpret the fable and to make inferences about the story because they did not share the same experience as it was illustrated and told about in the selected fable. In order to help students to make connections between their own experience and the illustration and also the wording of the fable, the teacher can create, write or select the illustration of the text she or he is going to use in the classroom. This is to help her or him to engage the students’ interest with the material. Creating, writing, or selecting the material is necessary so that the purpose the teaching and learning can be achieved. Furthermore, the students can combine their background knowledge and the associated features of the selected material so that they can have a stand point to begin understanding the English text.
