Isi artikelAssuming that global intelligibility should be the new target of pronunciation teaching for EFL learners, the current study attempted to explore factors determining global intelligibility (GI) through the analysis of native English speakers’ and ESL speakers’ assessment of the intelligibility of EFL learners’ utterances. For this purpose, two types of instruments were used: (1) recording and assessing Indonesian EFL learners’ utterances as the primary data and (2) conducting in-depth interviews with native-speaker and ESL-speaker assessors as the secondary data. The data collected from the recording assessment were quantitatively analyzed while the data collected from the in-depth interview were qualitatively scrutinized. The result of the study has revealed that there was non-negligible difference in the intelligibility judgment between native English speakers and ESL speakers. Another major finding was that adjustment in connected speech and word sound accuracy were still the most significant factors determining global intelligibility of EFL learners.
