Recently, the aim of teaching is not only to transfer knowledge but also to build students’ character. Therefore, it requires teacher’s creativity to correlate the teaching materials with the real situation to ease them understand how to think critically in solving a certain problem. Critical thinking is an important element in shaping students’ character. Students should not judge a certain condition as it appears. They should learn to be aware and to think critically of a certain condition. Thus, literature can be one of the alternative ways to shape students’ character. Through literature students learn many things about moral values. In addition, literature teaches them how to face the real life. Empowering literature in creating students’ critical thinking, for example can be done in the following ways. Students are asked to read a novel and to analyze it by using Gramsci’s theory about hegemony. Students’ main task is to investigate certain ideology imposed through hegemony in that work. Further, they are asked to relate what they have found in the literary work to the actual life. The result shows that this method can habituate students’ critical thinking by analyzing novel and correlating the issue in the novel with the real condition of their life. It helps them to understand more about what recently happens. However, they are going to be ready to think critically not only in the class but also when they are in society.
