Isi artikelImplied in most first things one learns, binary oppositions are often taken for granted as how things are and should be; and thus, are ideological. In a norm-oriented society such as Indonesia, such a mindset may lead to unfairly labeling of judging the different others, which discourages plurality and threatens the unity of the heterogeneous nation. Aimed at understanding the different others, particularly the marginalized, and promoting tolerance, this study borrowed the reader- response approach to enable 32 Prose students to utilize what they had learned in class to observantly and critically examine the binary oppositions and labels existing in their society. Three stories were discussed from the perspective of structuralism to examine the implied binary oppositions. Since binary oppositions are ideological, the class examined the ideologies underlying each pair of binary oppositions in the stories. The learners were asked to creatively express their observation of the binary oppositions existing in their society in group collage presentations, in which they also received comments and answered questions from the audience. The presentation was followed by the participants’ individual written report of their analysis of the labels and their underlying ideologies. The essays revealed most students’ critical questioning of the unfair judgments found in their society and the reasons behind them; thus, a stepping stone to better understand and tolerate the marginalized.
