Isi artikelThis paper highlights my personal literacy experiences both in Indonesia and in the United States. The paper also shows how my previous learning experiences affected my views on writing and writing pedagogy. Prior to starting my education in the US, I was thinking of gaining some necessary writing skills that are associated with western educational systems and apply them with my teaching upon my return to Indonesia. This view, however, gradually changed as I started my study in TESOL and began to understand that there are many things that I, as teacher, need to think about, not simply apply one set of views over another. I now see that differences possibly found between English and Indonesian writing systems as resources to be used when writing for different discourses and audiences. As the result, I would like to invite my students to see the textual and rhetorical differences in both Indonesian and English as resources for them; and to make them aware of the advantages of being multilinguals and multiculturals.
