Isi artikelAlthough questioning is widely used in teaching and learning activities, asking questions is still important since thinking is driven by questions. Asking questions will stimulate thinking. In the classroom when students ask questions, it indicates that they are thinking and learning. The quality of the questions shows the quality they are thinking (Foundation for critical thinking, 2010). The study reported in this article involved a class of Grade 11 consisting of 37 students. They participated in the questioning training as part of their English reading lesson for one semester. They learned questioning skills and different levels of questions based on Bloom’s taxonomy. After completing the training, ten of them were interviewed to investigate students’ perspectives about the effectiveness of the questioning skill. Using content analysis, the results reveal that asking questions was challenging for students. They required much practice since they were not familiar to ask thought-provoking questions in the classroom. They also perceived that the training was very useful for them. They learned specific skills such as reading comprehension and critical thinking. Expanding the use of questioning skills assisted them to learn other subjects. This implies that teaching and providing more opportunities for students to ask questions that those stimulate thinking in the classroom is still necessary.
