Isi artikelAny time there is a problem in the society, people will turn to blame schools for failing to provide qualified human resources suited to the contemporary need. When the number of unemployment keeps increasing, it is said that schools fail to produce qualified workers for the available jobs in the society. The schools fail to link and match their output to the society’s need. When there is moral degradation, schools are blamed for failing to produce graduates with good morality. The same thing happens when it is felt that people now commit bad conducts such as corruption, lack of discipline, lying, cheating, hedonism, anarchism, and terrorism. In this relation, schools are blamed for failing to teach character building. This article will try to explore what is meant by character building and what are possible causes so that character building is now in question. It will also put forwards some efforts, including the ones in English teaching, which can be exerted in the frame of character building. What are the materials suitable to teach character building? What techniques can be used to enhance character building? What are the roles of teachers to succeed the teaching of character building
