The data analyzed in this study come from an inquiry conducted with 838 young couples who were chosen at random out of the total number of first marriages contracted in Belgium in 1962. The interviews were taken during the first months of 1965; both husband and wife were questioned during the same session. The results, which seem to be in conflict with the findings of Westoff and Potvin, indicate clearly that the influence of religiousness and Catholic education on fertility values is real, although the mutual contamination of both factors seems to be great.
