During marriage a major family problem is that of maintaining consumption expenditures at a level consistent with physical needs and personal definitions of adequacy. Per person consumption in families is largely a function of disposable family income and family size. This paper first considers the structure of family income, and then examines some factors affecting family size. We then review alternative definitions of an adequate income for families with varying numbers, and present data on actual consumption, according to family income and family size. A model depicting the causal relations among factors affecting consumption per family member is developed. The assumption that equal family incomes will result in equal housing quality for whites and nonwhites is tested,
