This paper examines the extent to which particular socialization techniques are associated with the successful transmission of mothers' educational ambitions for their children. Interviews were conducted with 524 tenth graders and their mothers, residing in eight New Jersey communities. Mothers' educational ambitions for their children were strongly and positively related to the students' own educational plans, regardless of the extent to which they provided the students with culturally enriching activities, pressured them to do well in school, or kept in touch with the schools. This suggests that parental values are transmitted in many alternative ways, rather by specific instrumental behaviors.
