Isi artikel
This study is a beginning attempt to evaluate the impact of the frontier on the newspaper as a purveyor of cultural values. Articles from the miscellaneous literary columns of newspapers from Nashville, Tennessee, for the years 1801, 1811, and 1821, have been examined for changes in conceptions of ideal virtues, for recognition of the frontier situation, and for cultural definitions of the family. From an examination of the family (and related) items, it would appear that the newspaper was not particularly responsive to the frontier situation and thus tended to reflect the values of the seaboard civilization.
