Isi artikelData from a sample of employed working-class white and Negro husband-fathers showed that Negroes whose wives are employed outside the home and so share the breadwinner role are less active in household task performance and decision-making than Negroes whose wives are not employed. The relationship held when controls for family size, income, and age of youngest child were made. When the wife because of her husband's unemployment must take over the chief provider role, these findings suggest that he will be even less apt to fulfill his responsibilities as husband-father.That the results stem from the slavery era and past and present job discrimination against the Negro male is suggested by the finding that wives' employment status does not have a negative effect on the white men's participation in the family
