The authors present a survey of European and American sociological literature on young families covering the 1960-1968 period. Only articles published in sociological journals were examined, without regard to their methodological stance. Two samples were chosen and examined. This review attempts to evaluate the importance given to the study of young families. It describes their traits and guiding images so that hypotheses for further research may be discovered. It was found that this subject has been treated inadequately and that semantic deficiencies still need to be over come.
