Isi artikelIn his "World Ethnographic Sample," George Peter Murdock identified four major types of family organization: independent, extended, lineal, and stem families. Persons using this ethnographic sample for family studies have tended to combine the three latter types into a single category in their analyses. The purpose of this study is to examine the justification for this combination. After an analysis of the family types with all variables provided in the sample, the author concludes that the analytical combination of these three different family types will reduce, rather than strengthen, the extent of association between family types and other variables.
