Three hypotheses are derived from the resource theory of marital power and tested against data from probability samples of 812 farm and 514 urban families in West Germany. Power of German husbands is positively related to social status. However, the working wife has considerably more power than the nonworking wife, but the working wife's gain in power decreases with increasing social status. When husband's income, occupation, and social class were controlled, the wife's working status continued to be significantly associated with her position in the power structure. The husband's authority will be significantly weakened if the wife makes a comparatively equal or greater contribution to marriage. From the findings it is concluded that the partner's comparative participation in the external system determines his power position in the internal system, i.e., the family. While not all relationships are statistically significant, the data point consistently in the predicted direction
